Many Afro-Cuban dancers use Percussion Tutor to practice but most don’t know how to apply it to their dance. They open the app, see the rhythm, press play and then get stuck. In this article, I’ll show you how to use the app correctly so you stop feeling lost and start building real rhythm in your body. The Problem Most dancers today learn Afro-Cuban in festivals. Everything feels good while you are there. You follow the teacher. You learn the combination. You feel connected. But then you go back home and something changes. You open your video. You remember the movement. You open the Percussion Tutor app and then the question comes: “What rhythm is this?” And if there is no one around to ask… frustration begins. Why This Happens In festivals, there is not enough time to go deep. You learn fast. You move fast. You collect material. But rhythm… takes time. It takes listening. It takes repetition. It takes connection. I see this all the time with my students. They come back inspired but confused, because they learned the movement… without fully understanding the rhythm behind it. A Different Foundation My experience was different. Before I was allowed to dance, I had to learn how to drum and on top of that, I am an Omo Añá ( son of the drum). That changes everything. Because when you understand rhythm…movement is no longer something you copy, it becomes something you express. How to Use Percussion Tutor the Right Way Let’s keep it simple. Practice Exercise (5 minutes) Play the Ñongo rhythm in the app Hum the Okónkolo pattern Tap it on your thighs Then… add the step Not the other way around. Common Mistake Trying to dance before understanding the rhythm. The Principle Do not start dancing until you create your own rhythm. This is the difference. This is where real understanding begins.
