Primary Blog/Master Yoruba Dance from the Ground Up: Your Essential Beginner's Guide.
If you are just starting your journey in Afro-Cuban dance or you’ve been dancing to the Orishas for some time, this message is for you. When I began, I realized that the secret is not in collecting steps but in returning again and again to the fundamentals and even though I can call myself an experienced dancer I always come back to it. If you are new in this world, that’s perfect—you’ll start with a solid base. And if you’ve been dancing for years, I know from experience that going back to the roots allows us to refine our connection, break old patterns, and create habits that stay with us for life.
1) The drum is the real teacher. Immerse yourself in the rhythms of Bata. Let the pulse live in your chest and feet until it becomes second nature. Rhythm is not outside̶ it’s something you cultivate inside. 2) Before thinking of movements, awaken your body. Yoruba dance begins with torso, hips, feet, and breath. Train your mobility and let your body discover freedom before focusing on memorizing steps. DO NOT START DANCING UNTILL YOU CREATE YOUR OWN RHYTHM! 3)Don’t overwhelm yourself with dozens of steps. Begin with four essential movements inspired by the Orishas: - Elegua ‒ playful and open. - Yemoja ‒ fluid and oceanic. - Shango ‒ powerful and fiery. - Ogun ‒ grounded and strong. 4) Don’t imitate mechanically; embody the meaning. Ask yourself: What does this movement represent? Be curious! 5) Build up your dancer habit. YOU DON'T GET IN LIFE WHAT YOU WANT, YOU GET IN LIFE WHAT YOU FIGHT FOR.
